Service: Certina DS2 calibre 25-651

IMG_3663Nico from Italy sent in his father’s watch. It was bought in the early 70s, and Nico wants to have the watch serviced as a surprise for his father. It’s been worn daily since it was bought, and you can tell ๐Ÿ˜‰IMG_3664

The turtle on the case back. If you want to read up on the history of the watch, here is a good article.

IMG_3665The movement sits “floating” in a rubber ring. As the watch is over 40 years old, there isn’t much floating going on any more, as the rubber has hardened.IMG_3667

Very tidy bottom plate with date ring.IMG_3670

With the auto winder bridge removed, you can see the auto winder reverser wheels and gears – and some dirt.IMG_3687

All the components cleaned and ready.IMG_3827

The base movement back together and ticking – let’s see what the timegrapher has to say.IMG_3839

Yes, that looks nice!IMG_3834

The luminous compound on the hands is cracked, and some has fallen off. I re-apply some vintage brown coloured luminous compound, as that will go well with the dial.IMG_3838

With a new crystal and new luminous compound, the watch is looking great again. Sorry for the little specs of dirt on top of the crystal that I didn’t wipe off before the photo. Must have put my finger there ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. Grazie Christian! Yes, I agree with the comments. This Certina is a good classic piece with a simple and sturdy design. The watch is already back on its owners wrist tic long away on a new steel bracelet. My Dad really appreciated the gift.

  2. Hi All,
Old Certina watches were well-made, as evident with their movements, even in the 70’s, I like the asthetic look, clean and shiny polished, with yellow lettering declared the brand and the caliber. They seem in the olden days ahead of time in terms of their designs and in-house manufacturing. I have quite a few of them, vintage one, the time keeping element is as good as my vintage Omegas. I have to say they are undervalued generally, partly since the company is incorporated into Swatch group, Swatch decided to make it as the tier just like Tissot, even below Hamilton (owned by the same group). If anyone want a good ETA movement like 2832 or even 2892-2 with a fair price, go for Certina, you find yourself paying only twice the price of the movement, WMV (Watch/Movt Value) ratio of 2 or about.
Ps I don’t own shares of Swatch Group AC…. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Nice watch, and with your typical attention to detail for its service. Question: what did you do about that rubber ring that had hardened? Are there replacements available?

    • There are no replacements, and I left the old ring in. This construction never took on, as the movement is shock proof, anyway. It’s more of a marketing gimmick than something with real functionality.
